Monday, February 20, 2017Elwood Groce, and later her husband Colon Beeson, brother Guyion Angell, and sister Reba Tuttle. Opal is survived by her only son George William Groce and Sylvia of Kernersville; grandchildren Ginger Groce and Robin of Oak Ridge and Jeff Groce and Bonnie of Kernersville; great-grandchildren William Groce and Kimberly of Kernersville and Anna Groce of Kernersville; great-great grand-daughters Chloe and Lilly Groce; brothers Nelson Angell and Earlene and Oliver Angell and Carol. Opal was retired from Adam-Millis. She spent her free time sewing, gardening and travelling in her later years. Sylvia and Ginger were the recipients of many of her custom made dresses for special holidays. Kimberly Groce has been Opal's great-granddaughter, companion and caregiver for many years. We will never be able to thank her enough for her love and fierce dedication. The family would like to especially thank her doctor, Dr. Aaron Boals and his nurse Stacie Hackler. In addition, thanks also to the many associates with Hospice & Palliative Care Center, "Hospice Community Service". Funeral services celebrating her life will be 11:00 AM Wednesday February 15, 2017 at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Chapel. Cathi was born August 19, 1963 in Belleville, Illinois to the late Olive Tyson Merta and Richard John Merta. Cathi met the love of her life, John, in 1985. John didn't waste much time in getting down on one knee to propose, they were married in 1986. She found her calling in life in their marriage and raising their two daughters, and then enjoying her precious grandchildren. Cathi enjoyed nothing more in life than spending time with her family. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband John Brian Lontz; daughters Angela Lontz and Brooke Paulsson and husband Kevin Paulsson; grandchildren Gabriella, Kaira, Antonio, and Jason; sisters Maggie Mudd, Beth Hausele; brothers Steven Merta, and Chris Merta; and numerous other family members. Donald was a retired Navy Chaplain and Presbyterian Minister serving churches in Sparta and Kernersville, NC after his Navy retirement. He enjoyed reading, traveling and visiting family. He was past president of Shoals Chapter of MOAA of Florence, AL and a member of the American Legion Post 31, Tuscumbia, AL. He was involved with many civic activities such as Hospice of Alexander county, Kernersville Lions Club, Kernersville YMCA Board of Directors and volunteered with the Kernersville Crises Control, all of Kernersville, NC. He was also in the Sparta Lions Club, Sparta, NC. He attended McCormick Theological Seminary for his DMin., Chicago, IL, Southeastern Baptist Seminary for his MDiv., Wake Forest, NC. Florida Southern College, Lakeland, FL earning his BA. He certified as Intentional Interim and earned a certificate in clinical pastoral education at NC Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, NC. The family would like to express a special thanks to Gentiva Hospice and Gentiva Home Health for their care. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Choir Scholarship Fund, 1520 Rickwood Rd, Florence, AL 35630.
